On June 6, 2010 the Hamilton Family Center celebrated 25 years of serving homeless families in the San Francisco Bay Area. More than 200 people celebrated the occasion at an evening reception in the home of Jane and Bernard von Bothmer in Pacific Heights.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Representative Jackie Speier and San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi were in attendance. Pelosi received the Hamilton Family Center’s Poverty Prevention Award, and Dr. Elisa Stephens, president of the Academy of Art University was the evening’s special guest speaker. Salvador Menjivar, former executive director of the Hamilton Family Center, made opening remarks.
In October 2009, the Hamilton Family Center received $1.8 million in HUD/HPRP funding as part of the federal stimulus package. These funds have helped 76 families move to permanent housing and 100 families avoid eviction. Overall, this funding will help over 300 families stay out of the cycle of homelessness.
