I have always been curious whether Las Vegas is really where the action is when it comes to restaurants. While I am not convinced that all of Vegas lives up to the food hype, Restaurant Guy Savoy certainly took my breath away. The restaurant is tucked away in a quiet corner of Caesar’s Palace, at the top of a Cinderella staircase. If the suave young Frenchman who greets you upon entering the oasis away from the lights and jingles of the casino below looks familiar, that would be Monsieur Franck Savoy, son of the famous chef. His casually elegant demeanor as he jokes about his father sending him out to Vegas to keep him “out of trouble,” foreshadows the playful, yet refined dining experience awaiting in the understated, utterly stylish dining room (How do the French do it? Even in the midst of the chaos of Las Vegas …)
I wanted to eat a dozen of the miniature foie gras “club” sandwiches that are part of the opening amuses and submerge my head in the sublime artichoke truffle soup. Philip Pak, assistant sommelier, knows the perfect wines to pair with each course, but to maximize your experience, be sure to take advantage of the bread pairing. In addition to the Champagne cart, Guy Savoy offers a towering bread cart, loaded with an assortment of freshly baked offerings (baked on premises) to match each course, such as sesame with the crudo, lemon bread with the crispy sea bass, and bacon brioche with the sweetbreads. Regardless of whether you can afford the time and expense to fly to Paris to try the original, the Vegas outpost is definitely worth the trip out to the desert. But be sure to save some of your gambling winnings, or at least make sure your credit card has plenty of room left. While Guy Savoy is undoubtedly the best restaurant on the strip, it is also one of the most expensive.
