Dear Editor:
Congratulations on hiring a new publisher. It sounds like he has a lot of good experience and great ideas. You have two wonderful publications, and I look forward to watching them grow. Ellen HathawayDear
Editor:
I will be traveling to San Francisco in March to attend a conference. Many years ago, I had the pleasure of dining at Joyce Goldstein’s Square One restaurant, which I know is now closed. Has Chef Goldstein opened up any new restaurants in the San Fran area? I would love to go eat her fabulous food again.

Editor’s Note: No, she hasn’t opened another restaurant. Since closing Square One, Joyce has been consulting with other restaurants on their menus and writing about food and wine for many publications. She also has a number of wonderful books (Italian Slow and Savory is my favorite. Be sure to pick it up).
Dear Editor:
I love your paper and I am a BIG fan of Jasmine, but … I do a lot of charity work during this time
of year for Toys for Tots, and I realize how much you love your dog, but don’t you think the gift list (“Jasmine Blue’s Tails of the Dog Park,” Chapter 5: A few of our favorite things, December 2007) is a bit excessive?

Editor’s Note: When you consider
what people spend on their kids at Christmas (I heard a woman at a coffee shop tell her friend that she and her husband spent $30,000 on a mini-Ferrari for their 5-year-old), I don’t think Jazzy’s list of treats was excessive (tripe dog food, $1.80 to $2.00 for a 13.2 oz). Here at Northside Publications, we work with charities of all kinds, from groups fighting breast cancer to the American Red Cross, because we are first and foremost a community newspaper. I will admit that my personal time and money goes to the dogs (and cats), and I make no apologies for that, just as someone who supports charities for children or the homeless shouldn’t.
